Georgia inside linebacker Roquan Smith was the recipient of the 2017 Butkus Award, and on Friday, Smith had a chance to meet Mr. Butkus himself.
At practice on Friday, Georgia inside linebacker Roquan Smith held a brief conversation with football legend Dick Butkus, who the Butkus Award is named after.
Smith, who leads Georgia in tackles this season with 72, was named the recipient of the Butkus Award at Georgia’s award’s gala in early December. Smith beat out Devin Bush (Michigan), Tremaine Edmunds (Virginia Tech), T.J. Edwards (Wisconsin) and Dorian O’Daniel (Clemson) for the award, given to the nation’s best linebacker.
Butkus was a former NFL first round draft pick out of Illinois. During his professional career, the football legend was elected to eight pro bowls, was named first-team all NFL on six different occasions and was a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
