Former UGA LB Jake Ganus On Roquan Smith's Possible Departure For NFL

Former Georgia linebacker Jake Ganus came to Athens from Birmingham, Alabama, when UAB football was shut down by the school’s president in December of 2014.

Though Ganus was UAB’s leading tackler in two consecutive seasons, nobody expected him to have the impact he had at Georgia during the 2015 season. But Ganus performed very well, leading the Dawgs in tackles and winning team MVP honors at season’s end.

Ganus also helped to mentor some of the younger guys on Georgia’s roster, including rising star and then-freshman Roquan Smith, who was a highly regarded recruit out of Montezuma, Georgia.

A couple years later and Smith just finished his junior season at Georgia, and after putting together one of the greatest season’s in school history, is faced with the decision of returning to UGA or entering the NFL Draft.

We asked Ganus for his thoughts as to whether or not he thinks Smith, who is coming off a devastating national championship defeat to Alabama, will return to Athens next season.

“I can not confirm anything. There is nothing that would make me think he would come back,” Ganus said.

Smith’s likely departure for the NFL is something all Georgia fans are attempting to come to terms with. Though the DawgNation has seen the day coming for quite some time, they’re still holding onto a glimmer of hope that Smith will return for one last shot at a national championship.

However, an almost guaranteed first round pick will be hard to pass up for the Montezuma native.

Said Ganus, “He has earned everything he is about to get, which should be around $10-18 million signing bonus because he will be a top 15 pick.”

“I’m so proud of him. Best kid you’ll meet on and off the field. Without him this year, we don’t even sniff the natty.”
