Which UGA Underclassmen Are Staying Or Leaving For The NFL?

In the past week, numerous Dawgs have made their decision on entering the NFL Draft. The Dawgs got a mixed bag of players returning and leaving. They lost some serious star power on defense with the departures of Roquan Smith and Trenton Thompson, but they were able to keep #1 CB Deandre Baker, J.R. Reed and Jonathan Ledbetter. On the offensive side of the ball, receiver Terry Godwin chose to return to Athens, helping fill the void left by stud Senior WR Javon Wims.

CB Deandre Baker

Baker shut down Alabama superstar WR Calvin Ridley when he was guarding him in the National Championship Game. Baker is the best corner on UGA’s roster and should be the foundation of the Bulldog’s secondary.

WR Terry Godwin

Godwin made some highlight reel grabs (see: week 3 @ Notre Dame) over the course of the season and possesses excellent quickness and hands. He should be one of Fromm’s favorite targets in 2018.

DE Jonathan Ledbetter

Ledbetter recorded only one sack during the regular season, but stepped up in the College Football Playoff to record 1.5 sacks. If his strong playoff performance is any indication for 2018, he could be a breakout star.

S J.R. Reed

Reed had his breakout game vs. Florida, where he scored a defensive touchdown to all but clinch a Dawgs’ victory. Reed gives the Bulldogs some continuity at the safety position after losing Senior Dominick Sanders.

C Lamount Gaillard

Georgia’s offensive line exceeded expectations in 2017 and Gaillard will help it try to be dominant again in 2018. His return is big, since departing Senior LT Isaiah Wynn is going to be playing on Sundays.

Declared for NFL Draft:

LB Roquan Smith

Losing the Butkus Award winner hurts any team, especially the 2018 version of UGA, which also lost Senior LBs David Bellamy, Lorenzo Carter, and Reggie Carter. The good news is the Dawgs have a long offseason to fill this void and incoming 5-Star LB Adam Anderson.

DT Trenton Thompson

Georgia returns a lot of experience along the defensive line, including standout Tyler Clark and Julian Rochester. Incoming recruits and that duo should help fill the gap Thompson’s departure leaves.
