Though no specific role has been announced, Kirby Smart has added a good friend to his staff in former Georgia Southern head coach Tyson Summers.
Summers was spotted in the coaching booth at the Rose Bowl, sporting a UGA hat, and was on the recruiting trail on Thursday night paying a visit to Calhoun High School.
According to 247Sports, Summers is “working under a short-term contract in more of a consultant role.”
For the time being Summers has not been hired to a long-term role by UGA as the 10th assistant coach or to an analyst position. Instead he’s working under a short-term contract in more of a consultant role. Despite the fact that he hasn’t yet been tapped as the 10th assistant coach, NCAA rules allow him to fill that role as a recruiter as long as he’s employed by the program. Summers was with the Bulldogs in a consultant role late in 2017 season.
Summers is coming off a short head coaching job at Georgia Southern, where he was let go in October after posting a 5-13 record in 1.5 years. Prior to Georgia Southern, Summers worked under former Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, now the head coach at Colorado State, as the defensive coordinator in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Smart and Summers have a long history, having roomed together when the two were coaches at Georgia in 2005. Smart was the team’s running backs coach and Summers was a graduate assistant.
