Offensive Coordinator Jim Chaney Taking On New Role Within Georgia Offense?

According to Georgia tight end signee John FitzPatrick (Marist School; Atlanta, Georgia), UGA offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jim Chaney’s role within the Georgia offense may be expanding.

With Georgia losing its tight ends coach Shane Beamer to Oklahoma, head coach Kirby Smart will need to find a coach to fill the new vacancy. That coach may come from within, at least for the meantime, as FitzPatrick told 247’s Jake Rowe at Thursday night’s Atlanta Touchdown Club ceremony that Chaney may possibly be spending more time working with the tight ends.

“They’re figuring it out after signing day but coach Chaney is going to work with tight ends for a little,” Fitzpatrick said. “That’s what I’ve heard. I’ve heard he’s going to be more hands-on with the tight ends.”

Whether or not Chaney is actually going to become the tight ends coach is unclear; he may just be more involved with the until Smart can fill Beamer’s old role.

This would not be Chaney’s first time working with tight ends. Chaney worked with the unit during his time as offensive coordinator at Purdue and also was the tight ends coach for the St. Louis Rams in 2008.

“I love coach Chaney,” FitzPatrick said. “He’s a fantastic coach. I spent a lot of time with him on my official visit and throughout the whole process. I’m really excited to get to work with him.”
