Otis Reese Was Considered An OLB, But Kirby Smart Has Other Plans For The 4-Star Signee

After a historic National Signing Day for Georgia, Kirby Smart addressed the media during his Wednesday news conference.

Coach Smart signaled out four-star linebacker Otis Reese, from Lee County High (Georgia). The 6-foot-3, 204 pound Reese is slated to play safety for the Dawgs. Reese, who committed to Michigan nearly two ago before flipping to Georgia on Wednesday, was the the 5th rated outside linebacker in the country and the 7th highest rated recruit in the Peach State. He runs a pedestrian 4.60 40 but Smart believes safety will be his best position.

“Otis, he brings a force. He brings some contact toughness. He brings some size and stature to the safety position that we’ve had success, both Coach Tucker and myself, coaching big guys at safety,” Smart said.

Smart and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker have a preference for long and bigger defensive backs. They favor the physicality and leverage the bigger backs offer.

“So a lot of people list this guy at outside linebacker and inside linebacker,” Smart said. “He’s the size that the safeties should be. He could grow into something else but his first position is going to be safety, and we expect him to excel there. He did it at a really high, competitive level in high school.”

Reese played as a freshman at Lee County. With the Dawgs’ graduating three defensive backs, the former Trojan will have the opportunity to replicate his prep feat and see some playing time this fall.
