Kirby Smart Expects Deangelo Gibbs To Be Back With The Team For 2018 Season

Former 5-star defensive back Deangelo Gibbs has not been with the football team since late in the 2017 season thanks to an unspecified medical issue. Furthermore, in January, Dawgnation reported that Gibbs also was not enrolled in classes for the spring semester.

Gibbs will not be with the football team throughout the remainder of the spring, however, Kirby Smart sounds hopeful that the talented safety will make a return to classes and the football program for the 2018 season.

In addition to the unspecified medical issue, Gibbs is also rehabbing a shoulder injury.

“He’s doing very well with rehab. We anticipate a full return in the fall,” Smart said.

Gibbs recorded 3 tackles last season playing in only 6 games, with his last being against Florida.

With the departures of Malkom Parrish, Aaron Davis and Dominick Sanders to the NFL, if Gibbs does indeed return to Georgia next season, he will have a chance to compete for a starting role in the secondary. The only returning starters are Deandre Baker and J.R. Reed, which leaves plenty of holes to be filled, likely by Gibbs and Richard LeCounte.

Gibbs came to Georgia as a 5-star safety in the class of 2017, playing his high school ball at Grayson High School.
