ESPN the Zone’s 105.9 radio show, Out of Bounds, had 102.9 FM Tuscaloosa’s Ryan Fowler on to talk SEC football and recruiting on Tuesday.
While on the show, the subject of Kirby Smart and recruiting was brought up, which led to the unveiling of a nickname that the radio folks in Tuscaloosa have picked up for the Tide’s former defensive coordinator Smart.
Fowler mentions he, his colleagues and their listeners refer to Smart as “Kirby Freeze, because of his recruiting tactics.” This, of course, comparing Smart to former Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze, who many believed to be engaged in sketchy approaches to recruiting.
“Kirby has not cut Nick Saban any slack on the recruiting trail. Matter of fact – you guys will get a good kick out of this over there – we call him ‘Kirby Freeze’ over here in Tuscaloosa.”
Make of it what you will, but there’s a new recruiting giant in the SEC and NCAA, and Alabama fans are wasting no time making excuses for Georgia’s rise.
