On Tuesday at around 7 P.M., 2019 5-star linebacker Owen Pappoe, out of Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia, committed to Auburn over UGA and Tennessee.
Ten minutes following Pappoe’s commitment, Kirby Smart sent a tweet highlighting the fact that UGA produced the highest drafted linebacker in the 2018 NFL Draft, Roquan Smith, who went No. 8 overall to the Bears.
The timing of this tweet was 100% not a coincidence. Smart knows exactly what he’s doing.
There’s no denying Georgia currently holds the title of “Linebacker University,” as UGA currently has 7 former linebackers playing in the NFL, including standouts Justin Houston, Thomas Davis, Leonard Floyd and Alec Ogletree. There’s also no denying that the plethora of former Dawgs in the NFL is a crucial recrtuiting tool used frequently by Georgia’s coaching staff.
Though Pappoe announced his commitment to Auburn, Georgia’s recruitment of the 5-star linebacker is by no means over. Smart and his staff will continue to heavily pursue Pappoe until he sends in his letter of intent come the signing period. As we saw with Smith in 2015, nothing is over until it’s made official. (Sorry, UCLA).
Georgia currently has the nation’s 5th rated recruiting class for class the 2019, featuring 3 5-star players.
