Georgia Cornerback Deandre Baker Ranks In Nation’s Top 10

In their countdown of the nation’s best players by position, USA Today has Georgia cornerback Deandre Baker at No. 6.

The former three-star prospect from Miami Northwestern High had a breakout junior year in 2017. Baker  started 14 games and had 44 total stops, led the Bulldogs in pass breakups with nine and was also second on the team with three interceptions. He was selected to the all-SEC second team.

USA Today’s analysis of Baker —

The most telling number from Baker’s junior season: zero. As in, the number of touchdowns Baker allowed in starting 14 games during Georgia’s run to the championship game. That’s pretty telling. As the Bulldogs move forward without star linebacker Roquan Smith, look for Baker to take on the mantle as the team’s top playmaker on defense.

The UGA business major has developed into a lockdown corner and is probably the defense’s most talented player. He’s a projected top-10 NFL pick in 2019.

“I’m very proud of what he’s done because he’s worked himself into what he is today as a player,” defensive coordinator Mel Tucker told the Red & Black. “He works really hard in practice, he’s developed in the meeting room, he’s emerged as a leader for us. I’m just really excited to see what he does this season.”
