Kirby Smart Rules One Player Out For Opener; Terry Godwin Considered Questionable

During his press conference on Monday, Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart met with the media and discussed the status of a few banged up players.

Tyrique McGhee

After breaking a bone in his foot in the team’s first scrimmage, UGA defensive back Tyrique McGhee will not play in week one against Austin Peay, according to Smart.

“Tyrique is running now, underwater, non-weight bearing running,” Smart said. “We’re hopeful to get him back for South Carolina [on Sept. 8], but he won’t be able to play this game.”

Terry Godwin

A lingering MCL injury has senior wide receiver Terry Godwin listed as questionable for Saturday’s game.

“We don’t know if Terry will be back, hope to get Terry back,” Smart said.

After catching 35 passes his freshman season and 38 during his sophomore campaign, Godwin had a breakout year in 2017 for Georgia. Still catching 38 balls as a junior, Godwin tallied 639 yards, an increase from 397 a season before. He added 6 touchdowns as well and is one of quarterback Jake Fromm’s favorite targets.

Georgia begins its season on ESPN against Austin Peay on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
