Georgia and Clemson To Tee It Up In Atlanta

Georgia and Clemson will open the 2024 season at the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the border state rivals, after months of discussions, have agreed to renew their 64-game rivalry.

Only 75 miles of I-85 separate the two campuses and over the years the Tigers and Bulldogs have played many memorable games. Tiger head coach Dabo Swinney has stated his desire to restart the series and Kirby Smart has let it be known that he favors opening the season with Power 5 teams.

“I love playing a Power Five team if we can do it,” Smart said, “I think it’s a better offseason, a lot more to look forward to. I’d love a home-and-home. I’d love a neutral site. I love those type games, especially an opportunity to play in Atlanta, which we are always looking to do. I love that.”

Georgia has dominated the series, winning 42 times. Clemson has 18 wins against UGA and there have been four ties. The last two games were a home-and-home series in 2013 and 2014, with the Dawgs winning the last matchup, 45-21 in Athens.

“If it was up to me, we’d play Georgia every year,” Swinney said in a radio interview. “It sure would make our schedule a lot easier. Just simply because, we have to go all the way out to College Station this year, they’re going to come all the way here. You know, me growing up in Alabama, I always watched Clemson-Georgia. That was just one of those games.”

This will be Georgia’s fifth Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game. UGA is scheduled to play Virginia in 2020 and Oregon in 2020. Coach Smart opened his head coaching career against North Carolina in the 2016 Kickoff game.

Adding Clemson to the schedule significantly upgrades the quality of the non-conference schedule. The Tigers have appeared in each of the last three college football playoffs. In addition, the Bulldogs have Notre Dame at Sanford Stadium in 2019. The Dawgs are contacted a to play a home-and-home with UCLA in 2025 and 2026 and UGA and Texas are in discussions to schedule a series as well.

Georgia opens the 2018 season at home this Saturday against Austin Peay at 3:30 p.m. Clemson entertains Furman at 12:20 p.m.
