Georgia Coach Kirby Smart Praises South Carolina Wide Receiver Deebo Samuel

Kirby Smart might have himself the top receiving core in the country, but that did not stop him from praising his opponent’s top receiver, too.

The reigning SEC Coach of the Year had positive things to say about South Carolina’s Deebo Samuel, coming off a season-ending ACL injury against the Kentucky Wildcats last season.

Smart told reporters at his weekly press conference Monday that Samuel was a great wide receiver, despite only playing in three games last season.

The Bulldogs’ head man even went to the extent of putting Samuel with the top wide receivers in the country, stating “he’s probably the most underrated player in all of college football.”

“I don’t know that everyone in the country knows what the SEC knows about Deebo Samuel. The guy is phenomenal,” Smart said.

Smart recalled the game between Georgia and South Carolina two years ago, where Samuel caught 4 receptions for 90 yards.

“Even two years ago he gave us fits in that game and then you turn around and say he has a tough injury he has to deal with, but before he had that injury he had some of the most electric kickoff returns in the country.”

Samuel may have been limited to three short games last season, but he still tied for the South Carolina lead in touchdowns, with six.

Not only is the wide receiver an offensive threat, but also a kick returning specialist.  Samuel and Georgia’s Mecole Hardman should have a field day Saturday trying to outdo each other in a crucial SEC East battle.

Last week, Samuel caught 7 passes for 56 yards and this incredible touchdown.

Last season, Samuel started the season with a touchdown on the opening kickoff against NC State.
