South Carolina Wide Receiver Deebo Samuel Recalls First Georgia Game

In 2014, the South Carolina Gamecocks hosted the – at the time – 6th ranked Georgia Bulldogs in a pivotal SEC matchup.

Coming off a week one win for Georgia over Clemson, USC pulled off the major upset in front of its home crowd after a missed game-tying field goal by UGA kicker Marshall Morgan and a controversial turnover on downs call.

The final score, 38-35 USC.

This was during USC wide receiver Deebo Samuel’s true freshman year, a year in which he was redshirted. Though Samuel was forced to watch the madness from the sidelines, this was the one game in this historic rivalry that stood out to him.

“My freshman year, the year that I redshirted, I remember how loud it was and I remember the ground was shaking,” Samuel said when asked about his first memory of playing Georgia.

“That’s how I knew Georgia was a rivalry for us,” he added.

Samuel also mentioned that practice this week had more energy and focus than last week — a sign that both teams are hungry for a win this upcoming Saturday.

“If you were out there today, you could see there was more energy, more focus going on there this week than there was last week,” he said.

After his redshirt year, Samuel has participated in 2 games against Georgia. The first coming in 2015, where he recorded 2 catches for 20 yards in a 52-20 domination by Georgia. The second came in 2016, where he recorded 4 catches for 90 yards in a 28-14 win by the Bulldogs. Samuel did not get a chance to face UGA last season, as he suffered a broken leg in a week 3 matchup against Kentucky, a game where he recorded 5 catches for 122 yards and a TD.

This Saturday’s game will kickoff at 3:30 p.m ET and will air on CBS.
