Sports Illustrated Moves Georgia Up In Power Rankings

After a dominant display against South Carolina on the road, Sports Illustrated anointed Georgia as one of the few teams to be a legitimate national title contender.

Georgia (2-0, 1-0) overpowered the No. 24 Gamecocks by controlling both lines of scrimmage and imposing their will upon the Sandlappers in the second half. The Bulldogs’ 41-17 victory solidified UGA’s hold on the SEC East.

Alabama retains Sports Illustrated’s top spot. Clemson, Ohio State and Wisconsin follow Georgia in the power rankings.

Even though it’s early September, the SEC East can almost be called at this point. Georgia showed it is still the class of the division with a thorough beatdown of the Gamecocks at Williams-Brice Stadium. Jake Fromm was his steady self with 194 passing yards and Georgia’s stable of running backs galloped for 271 en route to a fourth straight win over South Carolina. The Bulldogs’s remaining SEC regular season tests come from West foes LSU and Auburn later in the season.

Georgia returns to Sanford Stadium on Saturday for the first night game of the season. Middle Tennessee (1-1) will be the second of four Volunteer State teams to visit Athens this year.
