Kirby Smart Talks Georgia Kicker Rodrigo Blankenship - Nothing But Love For Hot Rod

After going 2/2 on field goals against South Carolina, Georgia kicker Rodrigo Blankenship was named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week.

He hit from 44 and 45 yards, including a clutch field goal right before the half to regain momentum. In addition, Hot Rod was 5/5 on extra points and bombed each of his 7 kickoffs in the end zone for a touchback.

Georgia is certainly lucky to have a weapon like the Blankenship on the team, whose career long was a much needed 55 yarder against Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl.

And Kirby Smart knows just how lucky he is to have Blankenship as well.

On Monday, Smart commented on the kicker out of Marietta, showing nothing but love.

“He’s been incredible, to be honest with you,” Smart said.

“I think our special teams staff does a tremendous job of making sure he’s fresh. He does a tremendous job of taking care of his body. It’s shown in the last two games with the power and drive consistently. Most guys wear out as the game goes on, maybe have to kick another kicker, or maybe don’t kick him at all, he just continues to pound the ball and does a great job doing it.”

Blankenship came to Georgia as a walk-on out of Sprayberry High School, but after proving his worth, Smart was finally convinced to reward him a scholarship, which Blankenship announced to his teammates after last season’s Notre Dame game.

“He’s a leader on our team,” Smart said. “And he’s awesome to work with. I mean, he’s become a weapon. And we have to use him as such.”
