Clemson QB Kelly Bryant Transfers; Could A Similar Situation Play Out In Athens...Again?

Just days after Clemson coach Dabo Swinney replaced ACC-winning quarterback Kelly Bryant with freshman standout Trevor Lawrence, Bryant announced that he would be transferring from the Tigers.

The senior quarterback has a year of eligibility left, with the NCAA’s new transfer rule giving him the chance to play another season elsewhere immediately.

“I feel like it’s what’s best for me & my future. I was just going to control what I could control & try to make most of my opportunity but at the end of the day I just don’t feel like I’ve gotten a fair shot” said Bryant.

As far as the Bulldogs’ quarterback debate, Jake Fromm has retained his starting spot for the first four games of the season. 5-star freshman Justin Fields has seen extended action against Austin Peay and Middle Tennessee but was very limited in his first two SEC games. Though he did look very good.

Last year, Fromm played the role of Lawrence at Clemson, coming in and beating out Jacob Eason, forcing him to eventually transfer to Washington.

Swinney and the Tigers showed signs of a quarterback change early on, however, giving Lawrence early snaps in a tight Texas A&M contest. The Bulldogs on the other hand do not appear ready for a change, as Fields usually trots out to the huddle when the game is all but decided for Georgia.

Fromm – who led Georgia to a national title as a true freshman and currently ranks in the top 10 nationally in terms of passer rating and percentage – had a difficult time on Saturday against Missouri, especially in the first half.  A common concern of experts around the country has been Fromm’s lack of confidence in slinging the ball deep. Though the sophomore from Warner Robins did toss a handful of gorgeous deep balls in the last two weeks to the likes of Mecole Hardman, Riley Ridley, and Jeremiah Holloman.

A quarterback change in Athens could take place this season, though it is doubtful.  The Bulldogs would likely have to find themselves in deep trouble in order for Smart to make the move. But as Eason remembers all too well, a slight injury could change everything.

If Georgia goes down to Baton Rouge and falls into an early hole, then a Saban-like change might be made.  However, the Dawgs have shown no signs of replacing Fromm, unless disaster strikes.

Obviously, this is all speculation, but it would not be too crazy to picture Fromm in a different uniform down the road, with the security of the quarterback position at an all-time low in today’s game.

Personally, I think Georgia’s best shot at repeating as SEC Champs is with Fromm. He’s done everything right, he has the team’s trust and his accuracy is there.

Though in college football, when you have a 5-star quarterback waiting his turn on the bench, anything is possible.

If Fields is able to secure the starting spot in Athens like Lawrence has at Clemson, Fromm transferring would likely become a reality.

Instead of losing one of the talented quarterbacks, an intriguing scenario would be to use both. Fields has the ability to be a dangerous dual-threat, while Fromm can make almost any throw, but sometimes holds on to the rock a second too long. If Smart wants to bolster his already talented team into an unstoppable monster, then finding a way to distribute meaningful snaps between the two is an idea.

The Bulldogs are ranked second in the nation and have yet to score less than 40 points in a game, so right now I see no need for a change. As long as the Dawgs keep winning, the good times should keep rolling.

However, the decision of Jalen Hurts to stay at Alabama (for now) and Kelly Bryant to leave Clemson provide us with an interesting point of discussion on the position.

Is it not wild that two of the four quarterbacks from last year’s College Football Playoff have been replaced, with Georgia being the only team left with the same starter?

Oklahoma had no trouble replacing Heisman-winner Baker Mayfield, while the Dawgs also have a backup plan if needed. The rich just keep getting richer, as all four of last year’s participants are undefeated and ranked in the Top 10.

It’s almost unfair, isn’t it? But we’re ok with it.

But just for fun, let’s talk hypotheticals…

Now, picture this. The transfer-reliant Auburn Tigers get a huge pick up with Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm after Justin Fields leads the Bulldogs to a national title.

(Smart would never allow it, but let’s ignore that for now.)

Fromm joins his brother Tyler on The Plains, where he will look to lead the Tigers to glory, with a trip to Athens in late November.

The chances of this happening are incredibly rare but for Auburn, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”

Who would have thought 5-star Eason would be suiting up in purple & gold in 2019, after starting at Georgia as a freshman?

Ah, college football.  You never fail to surprise us.
