Georgia Great Nick Chubb Silences His Critics

The revitalized Cleveland Browns defeated divisional rival Cincinnati Sunday 35-20 behind the running and receiving of rookie Nick Chubb and the passing of Baker Mayfield.

Chubb had a season high 28 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown. He also had three receptions for 44 yards and a spectacular touchdown catch.

Cleveland opened the game with a 23 -yard pass to Chubb and the former Bulldog capped the initial drive with a touchdown run. He saved his best of the day on this sensational second quarter TD reception.

Remember these analyses of Chubb’s pass catching abilities prior to the NFL Draft? I bet Nick does as well.

Chubb could become an average NFL starter, but his lack of third down value may end up hurting his draft stock.

The downside is that his top speed leaves a bit to be desired. Don’t expect Chubb to be pulling away from many NFL defensive backs in space.

In the right scheme, Chubb can be a Day 1 starter if he’s asked to pound the ball between the tackles and not be a slasher or a receiver out of the backfield. Chubb has not been an active threat on third downs and doesn’t bring obvious value to the table as a pass-catcher.

Limited touches as a receiver, average hands, can let the ball get into his body, limited by his athletic limitations to separate consistently.
