Georgia Defensive Back Deandre Baker First Bulldog To Win Prestigious Award

Georgia cornerback Deandre Baker won the 2018 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the nation’s top defensive back. The senior from Miami beat out Notre Dame cornerback Julian Love and LSU cornerback Greedy Williams for the award.

Baker, named to the All-SEC first team, is expected to be a high first round NFL draft choice. He is the first Bulldog to ever win the award.

Baker was superb this season for the Dawgs as he shutdown some of the best wide receivers in the conference.

Baker only has 11 passes defended this season (tied for 6th in the SEC) but it’s a misleading stat. Teams just refuse to target the man he is covering. Baker has been targeted 38 times in 2018, giving up just 18 receptions without a touchdown allowed. He has forced nearly as many incompletions as he has allowed receptions, currently with 13 forced incompletions. His 34.2% forced incompletion rate is the best among all defensive backs this season.

Baker is the consummate teammate as well. He plans to play in the Sugar Bowl, his final game as a Bulldog.

“It played a big role,” Baker said when asked about playing in the Sugar Bowl. “I want to finish with a W for my team in my last game as a Bulldog.”
