Georgia vs. UMass: Preview, Analysis And Prediction

Preview

The (7-4) Georgia men’s basketball team takes on UMass (7-5) Sunday at 6:00 pm in Stegeman Coliseum.

Georgia, riding a two-game win streak after a victory over the rival Yellow Jackets is feeling good.  The Bulldogs are playing some of their best basketball this season and looking very impressive heading into Sunday.

However, UMass did upset Georgia 72-62 in Amherst last season.  Though, the statistics tend to slightly favor the Bulldogs, especially on the glass and in blocks for Sunday’s contest.

Analysis

The Minutemen average 79.8 points while Georgia averages 78.1 points per game.  UMass also allows 74.6 points per game and the Bulldogs allow 70.4 points per game.

Georgia is favored by 7.5 points but this game really should come down to the wire.  The key factor for the Bulldogs will be containing Luwane Pipkins who averages 19.9 points for the Minutemen.

Per usual, Nicholas Claxton will have to go to work on the glass and dominate in the paint.  Tyree Crump will also have to heat up from beyond the arc, which certainly can’t hurt.  Georgia knocked off the Yellow Jackets thanks to Claxton’s big day and a momentum shifting dunk from Amanze Ngumezi.  Another big factor in Georgia’s play is Rayshaun Hammonds.  The 6’7 forward needs to win the battles down low just like Claxton.

If Ngumezi can get ‘the Steg’ rocking without students early, the Dawgs can really take advantage.  I like the Dawgs to get the job done in this one and finish off nonconference play on a high note.

Prediction

I would not call today a must win with so much basketball left but it will be crucial to boost confidence heading into a daunting matchup with Tennessee on Saturday.

Prediction: Georgia 75, UMass 66
